The Baptism With The Holy Spirit
There’s a third step to take to release God’s power in you. The Bible calls this: The Baptism With The Holy Spirit.
We must have God’s Power for victorious living, for telling others about our newfound relationship with God, and for serving Christ’s purpose on earth!
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you shall be witnesses to me in Jerusalem, and all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Acts 1:8
When And How To Release The Baptism With The Holy Spirit
Step 1:
You Ask Your Heavenly Father For The Gift Of The Holy Spirit.
“If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” Luke 11:13
In other words, you invite the Holy Spirit to have full access to your life. John said this of Jesus … “I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” Matthew 3:11
This is what the disciples of Jesus received on the day of Pentecost.
“When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” Acts 2:1-4
This is the pattern we see all through the Book of Acts when believers came to Jesus as Savior. (Acts 2, Acts 10, Acts 19: Salvation, Water Baptism, Baptism With The Holy Spirit.)
Step 2:
Expect To Receive
If you then, evil as you are, know how to give good gifts [gifts that are to their advantage] to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask and continue to ask Him! Luke 11:13 (Amp.)
When an honest, hungry seeker asks for baptism with the Holy Spirit, he need not fear receiving less than God’s promise. He should relax in faith. It is not necessary to work up one’s emotions. A simple yielding to God and taking the time to vocalize the “wonderful works of God” will give the answer. The Holy Spirit is not received after many years of struggle trying to live for God. God wants people to receive the Holy Spirit at the beginning of their Christian experience.
Step 3:
No Need To Fear
“You fathers—if your children ask for a fish, do you give them a snake instead? 12 Or if they ask for an egg, do you give them a scorpion? Of course not!” Luke 11:11-12
Jesus would never allow something bad or evil to come into your life when you come to him as a sincere seeker! The devil is the one who has put this fear in the hearts of many people! He knows how desperately we need God’s power. He knows it is the key to a victorious life of freedom and fulfilling service for Jesus.
Step 4:
Know This Promise Is For You
Then Peter said to them, “Repent and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 “For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.” Acts 2:38-39
Step 5:
Yield To Your New Prayer Language
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Acts 2:4
As Peter was praying for the Gentiles, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard, and they began speaking with tongues and magnifying God. Acts 10:44-48
And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied. Acts 19:6
Paul went on to say: “I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all…” I Corinthians 14:18
Why The Spiritual Prayer Language?
- Because It’s Biblical
Remember, on the day the church was born – everyone received this resource for worship and prayer, and at the same time they received the fullness of power for service and witness. Also, remember it’s for all who come Acts 2:38-39.
- Because It’s Beneficial
But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, Jude 20
He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding. I Corinthians 14:4
- Because It Broadens Your Prayer Life
Likewise, the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Romans 8:26
- Because It’s A Blessing
And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name, they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; Mark 16:17
Additional Thoughts About Your Prayer Language
What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.” 1 Corinthians 14:15
This verse makes it clear that you must exercise your will! In other words, it’s a choice! This requires faith – all prayer is faith! Often when we pray, we don’t feel a thing. In the same way, stepping out in your prayer language is a faith exercise. Sometimes it sounds like a few syllables to me. Parents, you recall the halting speech of a child or grandchild. My point is once you Pray To Receive The Baptism In The Holy Spirit, You May not have a fully formed vocabulary; you might, but it’s not the norm. However, you are going to have to open your mouth and start talking in a language you don’t know.
It will require faith and a conscious decision to cooperate with the Holy Spirit.
Dennis Bennett, in his book How To Pray For The Release Of The Holy Spirit, says, “Now, like a little child beginning to talk, just speak out the first sounds that come to your lips. Don’t even listen to yourself, just begin to make sounds. Keep your mind and heart on the Lord. Talk to him. Offer him the syllables that come, just like a child. And after you begin to make a sound, keep on going. Try not to talk in English or any other language you know. You can’t speak two languages at once. Pay no attention to any doubt, just keep on speaking. Don’t worry about how you feel or how you sound. Just keep talking to God in the new words he is giving you. You are speaking to your Father in heaven.”
For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit, he speaks mysteries.” I Corinthians 14:2
It’s perfectly all right just singing if you want to. This is what the apostle Paul calls “singing in the spirit.” Some people at first find it easier to begin singing in the new language than to speak in it. You can sometimes get free and sing when you can’t seem to talk. Let the Holy Spirit guide your words, but also let him give you a tune. It may begin with a few simple notes, or perhaps it may be one note. After singing a while, try to speak in the spiritual language.
As you come to Jesus in prayer, begin to praise the Lord openly in your own language. Remember when you seek Him and praise Him, you can’t do anything wrong! Come to Jesus like a little child, in trust and simple faith. Believe and Receive! Remember this is a Biblical request.
Prayer
Lord, You gave the Holy Spirit to Your Church to help us fulfill the Great Commission. I ask You in faith for this free gift, and I receive right now the baptism in the Holy Spirit. I believe that You hear me as I pray, and I thank You for baptizing me in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking with a new, supernatural prayer language. Amen
